Tell us about your background and role at Halma

I’ve spent more than 15 years of my career working with engineers in the medical device industry. I’ve held several commercial and marketing leadership roles, so I was often representing the voice of the customer whilst the engineers were the voice of the technology and we had to figure out how to merge those together to create compelling, differentiating solutions for our customers.

What are you currently working on that will make an impact on the world?

One of the opportunities my companies are assessing is telemedicine. In ophthalmology specifically, we’re talking about the ability to enable virtual assessment and diagnosis. When I think about the many demands we’re facing today, trying to balance work and family while ensuring our loved ones get the quality medical care that they need, I know that solving for time and convenience without sacrificing the quality of care is a win – and will go some way to achieving our purpose of growing a safer, cleaner, healthier future for everyone, every day.

What advice would you have for a young girl wanting to go into engineering?

I have two daughters and the oldest is very much into STEM and is a maths whizz! My advice to her, as with all young people, focuses on these three things: will, skill and confidence.

First, be driven, passionate and have the desire for what you do.

Second, develop your skill set and perfect your capabilities and competencies.

And thirdly, and most importantly, be confident in your ability and have the humility to listen and learn along the way. Don’t let other people’s insecurities and perceptions limit your possibilities. Be confident, know that you belong and can contribute at the highest level.
