Every drop counts

Water is fundamental to life. Every single one of us needs it every day. We need it to drink, wash, cook, grow crops, use in industrialised processes. It touches every aspect of our lives either directly or indirectly. But having access to water isn’t enough; it must be clean and safe. Contaminated water can have potentially life-threatening consequences.

A clean water supply is something that most of us take for granted. Yet despite being recognized by the United Nations as a human right, 1 in 10 people around the world still don't have access to clean water. In addition, 2 in 5 people lack hand washing facilities at home, a disturbing figure when we consider that hand washing is a critical component of the global response to tackling COVID-19. Even where access to clean water exists, ensuring a reliable, safe supply is vital. Contamination from industrial or human waste, deadly pathogens, and damaged or corroded pipework all pose a threat to human life.

At Halma, six of our companies have technologies that are helping to solve the global problem of access to safe, clean water and effective water management. They are Palintest, HWM, Hydreka, Mini-Cam, Sensorex and UV Group. Their technologies are focused on water analysis and treatment and each one provides innovative solutions for their customers. Together they make water safer by enabling over 200 million water tests annually. They also help to conserve water, with their technologies being used to monitor over 110,000 km of water pipelines.

Constance Baroudel, Halma Divisional Chief Executive, says:

“Water quality is one of the biggest issues facing the world today, which is why we are proud of the cutting-edge technologies our companies make to improve water quality and supply, and save lives across the globe. Whether it is ensuring safe water supplies in refugee camps, monitoring wastewater from hospitals with COVID-19 patients or using smart technology to maintain critical water infrastructure, Halma companies are playing a vital role in making the world safer, cleaner and healthier.”

Palintest has several technologies that analyse water quality. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic its water test kits were sent to provinces all over China to support early efforts to control the virus by testing hospital wastewater. It is also home to Wagtech, the leading brand for emergency response water testing. Its portable water quality laboratories enable simple and accessible testing in emergency situations and remote and challenging environments, such as refugee camps and natural disasters, where water quality must be rapidly assessed to protect public health, and to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.

Palintest has also developed life-saving sensor technology (Kemio Heavy Metals), which allows users with little or no training to analyse drinking water for lead contamination on-site in just three minutes. The importance of this technology has been brought into sharp focus by a recent UNICEF report which estimates that 1 in 3 children – up to 800 million globally – are reported to have blood levels with concerning amounts of lead present.

The supply of clean water depends on effective, functioning infrastructure. Failures in water supply networks can have serious implications for the communities which rely on them. Halma company HWM is a leading manufacturer of utility network monitoring solutions that save customers water, energy, time and money. Its state-of-the-art products use smart technology to help utility companies improve the way potential leaks are identified before they happen. For example, in the UK HWM is currently working to with utilities provider Yorkshire Water on an innovative smart technology trial - the biggest of its kind in Europe - which aims to use data, machine learning and artificial intelligence to reduce leaks. A smart water networks analytics system will watch for tell-tale signs that precede leaks, like a slight pressure drop in the pipe, helping to identify interruptions to supply before they happen.

Together, thanks to our companies’ passion for developing innovative technologies, we are helping to grow a safer, cleaner, healthier future for everyone, every day.
